Grammy was not a fancy or showy woman. She was most often reticent and always dignified. Yet that didn't halt her splashing on Evening in Paris toilet water, or enjoying a stimulating game of Chinese checkers on her personal hand hewn board, or even voicing her opinion on the immorality of poker playing to my father. She was shaped like a pickle barrel cinched with a belt. Her skin was as soft as my teddy bear's tummy and her voice was an encouraging harmony of guidance and affection. While I guarded her free floating white wispy hairs from the sneaking scissors of my little brother, we'd sit two to a chair, small child and old woman pillowed as one, sharing, learning. My expertise at rug braiding and the baking of chicken pot pie was her doing. This tiny woman tallied her birthdays four years short of a century. She is still within a thought's reach, my symbol of warmth and wisdom.
