The Story of My Baldness got my attention because of its great title.  Also, it won a first novel award for main character / author Marek Van der Jagt, though he had to give the prize back because he had already won the prize for another novel under his real name, Arnon Grunberg.

The book itself is a bizarre coming of age story.  'Nuff said.   Nancy

If you haven't already read, Robert M. Sapolsky's A Primate's Memoir, do it NOW.   You get Africa, science, politics, baboons and intelligently comic adventure in one volume.  And as you move deeper into the book, the insights are disturbing.

Sapolsky won a MacArthur Foundation genius grant - they did a good thing.  Nancy

As you read these reviews, you will notice a leaning toward mysteries.  And if you like what I like, then the discovery of a new series will bring you great and untrammeled happiness.

Corpse de Ballet by Ellen Paul combines an inside look at both the arts and the comforts of a very successful writer PLUS there is a mystery to solve.  Oh joy unfettered.  Nancy

The American Southwest is gorgeous.  If you've never had the opportunity to travel there, please make an attempt.  And if that is unlikely, at least pick up a mystery or two by Tony Hillerman and allow yourself to be whisked to a place that (for the most part) values its unique heritage and topography.

And now a word about our author:  I've been a fan of Tony Hillerman for years.  His mysteries are entertaining and educational.  Heck, they're incredibly readable - unlike this sentence.  Trust me on this one.  Nancy

Don't you just hate it when you begin in the middle instead of at the beginning?

I read Revenge of the Wrought-Iron Flamingos before I opened a page of book one in Donna Andrews' mystery series about a contemporary blacksmith and her entertaining family and friends.

Live your life in a more orderly fashion and start with Murder with Peacocks.  You'll be glad you did.  Nancy

(series)

PS  Andrews has begun a new series using a sentient artificial intelligence as her sleuth.  I can't wait for more volumes.  In the meantime, You've got Murder is a very nice read.

The London police have come a long way since 1829 when they were organized by Sir Robert Peel.  Part of that evolution took place on the mean streets of London, which form the crucible for Michael Pierce's Special Branch crime solver whose chronicles begin with the low key, but satisfying A Dead Man in Trieste
