My friend, Martha Baker, was a skilled seamstress. She taught me French Heirloom Hand Sewing at the Amelia Island Museum of History as well as smocking. She also shared this make in an evening pattern for a darling knitted newborn cap. She and her friends gave them to Nassau Baptist, our local hospital here on Amelia Island for the new babies. How wonderful is that? This makes a sweet handmade gift for any new mother and her baby.
You'll Need
What to Do Cast on 68 stitches. K2, P2 across the row. Repeat until the piece measures 6 inches long. K2 together, P2 together across the row, then purl back. K2 together across the row, then Purl back. Repeat until nine stitches remain on the needle. Cut the yarn leaving a 12" tail. With needle, weave through the nine stitches, pull tight and sew up the seam. Turn up the cuff of the cap. Stuff with tissue paper if you’ll be giving the cap as a gift for a fuller presentation.
To make an Optional Pompon Cut a length of cardboard 2" x 4". Wrap the yarn round and round the 2" width of the cardboard, on top of itself, until it is about 1/2 inch thick. With the needle, slide a 10" length of yarn between the cardboard and the yarn. Gathering the yarn together, tie a knot. Cut the group of yarn loops directly across from the knot and the cardboard will fall away. Shake the pompon to fluff it and trim it into a round ball over a trashcan. Tie it securely to the top of the cap with the knot inside the cap.
