Sootie
rose in Oklahoma City |
I'd had dogs as a little girl, but never a cat. Sootie was my first cat and our daughter's as well. They were the best of friends. Although Sootie had claws, she never scratched anyone. She loved to get on top of people who were on all fours and play "ride 'um, cowboy.” She cuddled like a cat is supposed to and seemed to happily wear the baby bonnets and scarves we'd dress her in. I bought Sootie a tasty looking brand of fish-flavored canned cat food. She loved it, but we didn't. It was the stinkiest stuff imaginable. I remember wondering how we would ever be able to stand the smell that was permeating the house. Fortunately, I discovered there were other brands of wet food that weren't so offensive and everyone was happy. The first time Sootie came in heat, she howled and howled. I told our daughter girl not to let her outside. I planned to take Sootie to the vet to be spayed as soon as I could. Children being children, our daughter listened to her kitty's cries to go outside more than her mother's instructions, and the next day Sootie returned home a mother to be. We prepared a cozy padded box for her in the basement. Six healthy kitties later, we noticed that Sootie was carrying one in her mouth from the basement to the attic. We followed her and discovered that she had taken all six of them upstairs to live in the bottom drawer of a chest of drawers. Not wanting her babies to soil the clothes in the drawer, I moved them all back down to the basement while Sootie watched. No sooner were they all back downstairs than she began all over again. After the second go-round, I gave up and let Sootie have her way, replacing the clothes with a clean, old towel. One Halloween, the local high school held a best costume contest. Our daughter dressed as a little witch, carrying her black cat in a safety harness. Each contestant had to walk across the stage. When our daughter's turn came, she appeared stage left and dragged a black cat behind her who was clearly none too happy about being on display in a contest. To this day, we talk about "taking the cat for a drag.” When we moved to Florida, Sootie never once ran away from home. She lived to be about 13 and was the best "first” cat anyone ever had.
