A pomander is a combination of aromatic materials in a loosely woven bag or box with holes or any aromatic object meant to improve the atmosphere. Pomanders were and are used to scent closets, linens and rooms. Dating from the 15th century, they were carried to ward off infection. Today, they make our homes smell wonderful. Our contributing editor, Bonnie Shivley, reminded me how worthwhile it is to make these good “smellies.” Here are her simple directions. Thank you, Bonnie. Enjoy, PS Don't forget to scroll down for the Double Helix Variation |
BASIC DIRECTIONS You'll need:
Tie the ribbon around the orange leaving enough length to tie it to hang it. Wearing a thimble or clean garden gloves to protect your fingers, poke a few of the cloves through the ribbon to keep it in place on the surface of the fruit. You may need a tiny nail or pin to get the hole started. Randomly poke more cloves into the orange or make a pretty pattern, your choice. How many cloves you use depends upon how strong you want the clove aroma to be. When completed, just hang it up. Your pomander will should stay fresh for weeks! Hide one in the center of the Christmas tree or above the threshold or archway. Don't forget to hang a pomander in the kitchen near the sink to make washing all those dishes a little more pleasant.
DOUBLE HELIX POMANDER Carefully peel one entire orange in a long single peel, cutting the strip about 1 1/2 inches wide. Cut the orange peel in half lengthwise, beginning at least 2 inches from the top and stopping 2 inches from the bottom so that the two pieces will hold together. Prick the peel with the point of a knife every inch or so and insert whole cloves. The peel will naturally spiral, look pretty and smell wonderful!!!
