Slave Weddings

Before slaves were freed by the American Civil War, slave marriages were not legally recognized.  Nevertheless, "the rate of marriages among slaves was as high as among white people," reported John Bailey from his research for The Lost German Slave Girl.  Bailey stated these marriages were performed by masters, black preachers, traveling parsons or obeah men.  The custom of jumping over a broomstick three times was also popular with the highest jumper expected to call the shots in the relationship.

Naturally, the marriage only lasted as long as it was convenient for the master.

Isabelle Allende has written a number of books, and though I haven't read them all, I find it hard to believe she could do better than Island Beneath the Sea.  It's an outstanding novel about the birth and implosion of Haiti.  Read it.  Nancy

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand is an outstanding first novel by Helen Simonson.  It explores small town prejudices in a charming English village and gently tugs at your heart.  You will be delighted.  Nancy

"A man's feet should be planted in his country, but his eyes should survey the world."  George Santayana

"Building a society where different cultures are welcomed and interaction valued is a difficult task. ... The trick - difficult, to be sure, but also rewarding - is to hold on to what is good, yet incorporate what is new."  Leonard Pitts, Jr.

"But this idea that some of us are less than the rest of us, that some of us are roaches, vermin, viruses, parasites, infestations, beasts or subhumans to whom one owes no duty of human decency or commiseration, didn't start with the Nazis.  It is as old as Cain.  As widespread as the common cold.

"Yet we don't learn, never learn.  Dead Jews become dead Rwandans become dead Serbs become dead Darfurians, yet still some of us mouth pious hatreds with a smug certitude and offhand arrogance accessible only to the deeply, profoundly and utterly wrong."  Leonard Pitts Jr.

"Cultural diversity kicks ass."  South Park

"Details of culture, color and sexuality are dangerous because they assume outsized importance in our mental calculus, because they have this ability to shape people's understanding of who one is."  Leonard Pitts, Jr.

"Differences are something you live with, not something you fight about."  John Hume

"For those who have seen the Earth from space, and for the hundreds and perhaps thousands more who will, the experience most certainly changes your perspective. The things that we share in our world are far more valuable than those which divide us."  David Williams

"Gay-bashing is the IQ demarcation line if the subzero intellect."  Tim Dorsey,  Cadillac Beach

"How can we remain silent about so many kinds of violence perpetuated in the name of faith? Wars of religion, the courts of of the Inquisition, and other mechanisms whereby the rights of individuals were violated ... It is necessary that the Church ... take the initiative in reviewing the darker aspects of its history, judging them in the light of the principles enunciated in the Gospels." Pope John Paul II

"Human diversity makes tolerance more than a virtue; it makes it a requirement for survival."  Rene Dubos

"I am glad I stayed in my seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus, Dec. 1, 1955."  Rosa Parks, civil rights hero

"I have never told my own religion nor scrutinized that of another.  I never attempted to make a convert, nor wished  to change another's creed.  I am satisfied that yours must be an excellent religion to have produced a life of such exemplary virtue and correctness.  For it is on our lives, and not from our words, that our religion must be judged."  Thomas Jefferson, letter to Mrs. H. Harrison

"I wonder why we say that people are of different 'races.'  It seems to me we're all running at the same speed and heading towards the same destination.  the only 'winners' are the ones who've made the world a better place for having been there!"  Lynn Johnston,  For Better or Worse

District 9 is a derivative science fiction documentary set in the townships of Johannesburg.  It's violent and racist and should probably be watched by everyone as a reminder of what we could become given a lack of tolerance.  Nancy

I read John Hersey's White Lotus as a kid in the sixties.  The idea that the Chinese would conquer the US and make us slaves was unsettling. It gave readers a little something extra to think about as the Civil Rights Movement was getting into high gear.  Although I recently tried and failed to reread White Lotus, the plot should be enough for you to pick it up.

Blonde Roots, by Bernardine Evaristo, is another twist on the if-whites-were-slaves theme.  In this book, the blaks enslave the wiggers.  Beware of tons of cutesy/clever references, but read Blonde Roots just to get a feel of the putting the shoe on the other foot (the whip on other shoulders).  Nancy

The Little Cupcakes, by Anthony King with Sue Hellard's illustrations, is a story for all children about the importance of difference and diversity.  It's a special read.  Nancy

Children's books

I wasn't going to read The Lost German Slave Girl by John Bailey on the grounds  millions of nameless slaves will never have their stories recorded, so how was the plight of a white slave in the US any more compelling?  But that's just stupid.  In fact, it sounds like politically correct speak.  Ugh.

The book, a factual account of American slavery, is horrifying, but well researched and well written.  I even learned why my German ancestors probably left Europe - the crops failed several years in a row due to massive volcanic eruptions that disrupted climatic patterns.

Read The Lost German Slave Girl no matter where your family history began.  Like the incredible saga of Adam Hochschild's Bury the Chains, the story of the British abolitionist movement, it's important to remember every story we can.  Nancy

Sadly, there is a darker side to our light-hearted enjoyment of the world of Gone With The Wind.  For a closer look, get a copy of The Fiery Cross, The Ku Klux Klan in America.  A trip to reality is not always pleasant for those of us who just want to live our lives, but it's always better to be informed.  Nancy

Dare to go Bear

Barbara Hambly opens each of her New Orleans-based historical mysteries with a chilling scene from the depths of slavery.  Once I've put myself in that time and place, Hambly spins a compelling web around her hero, a freed slave who cannot support himself as a physician despite his French training.  That world seems totally mad to me until I catch the latest news where somewhere in the world someone will be degrading and exploiting someone else.  At least Hambly's novels have a positive resolution.

As far as I can tell, you should begin the series with A Free Man of Color Nancy
