I originally made these easy placemat dog coats for our family of Yorkshire Terriers, who sadly are now all gone from us.

You can read about Honey Bear, Gracie Fleur and Pootie at EternityGarden.com, our website where we remember beloved pets who have touched our lives.

This coat will fit dogs as big as 12 pounds or so, depending upon how wide you turn back the collar and the configuration of your animal, meaning long versus tubby.

      Enjoy,
     Jane Marie

Doggie Coat

Spew modeling Doggie Coat

You'll need:

  • 1 two-sided purchased fabric placemat (18 1/2" x 12 1/2") (each side should have a different pattern)

  • 24" coordinating ribbon, approximately 1/2" wide or 12 " hoop and loop tape (Velcro brand)

  • Needle & coordinating thread

  • 14" coordinating lace (optional)

  • Decorative trim (optional)

  • Fabric glue (optional)

Small Dog Directions

Decide which side of the two-sided placement you want to emphasize.  Turn back one 12 1/2" edge (shorter edge) approximately 3" for the collar so that only a small part of underside of the placemat shows.

Cut the ribbon into four 6" pieces for the neck and tummy straps or cut the hoop & loop tape in half to make two 6" pieces.

With needle and double thread, tack the ribbon on each underside of the collar to tie at the neck.

Tack a piece on each side of the middle edge of the turned back mat where it will tie around the doggie's tummy.

If using hoop & loop tape, pull apart one 6-inch piece and tack the hoop side to one underside edge of the collar and the loop side to the other edge of the underside of the collar.  Repeat at the middle edges for the tummy strap.

If the coat is for a male dog, you're done.

If it's for a female dog, lace trim may be added to the edge of the collar with a simple running stitch or fabric glue.  Add a bow or sequins; whatever you think will enhance the appearance of your already beautiful pet!  This makes a great gift for any small dog.

Larger Dog*

The only difference in the instructions is that you will have to make your own two-sided placemat by sewing the outside edge (1/4" seam allowance) of two pieces of heavier fabric, wrong sides together, leaving an opening to turn it right side out.

Turn the fabric right side out, and stitch the opening closed.  Fabric glue may be used instead of sewing.

Proceed as directed above, however, the neck and tummy straps will have to be longer.

*The size of your dog will determine the amount of fabric you will need.

If you're not sure about size, place towels across your dog's back until you find one that covers adequately.  Use this towel as a cutting guide for your fabric - or use the towel as a replacement placemat if you like!
