Nancy and I grew up about 3 miles from Lake Erie in Erie, Pennsylvania.   We love to go home to see family and friends, but we drool when we think about the wonderful restaurants.  As for the beach, well, pictures can't do it justice.

Beach Memories and Good Eating
in Northwest Pennsylvania

By Nancy Kamp

Going home brings on the memories.  People and events aside, there is no place I'd rather eat than Erie.  And the beach is great too!

LOCAL DINING FAVORITES

Our family loves Italian food.  That's why the list is so heavily weighted.

  • Arnone's is located at the corner of 18th and Cherry with a bakery and Italian product shop diagonally across the street.  We had a family meal here on our last visit.  The service was excellent and the food was good - though some preferred the marinara sauce to the sauce that comes on the spaghetti.

  • Barbato's - Local chain (814-459-2158) you won't want to miss.

  • Chuck and Ginny's - This restaurant had the family vote for the best Italian restaurant in Erie until lately.  (429 Raspberry)

  • Linda Austin's Beautifully Decorated Cakes - Friend Kim says this is the bakery to choose.  (814- 838-0777)

  • McGarrey's Oakwood Cafe (1624 West 38th St). - One of Dad's hangouts.

  • Patti's Pizza - Click on the link for discount coupons and maps to brother Bob's idea of pizza heaven.

  • Molly Brannigan's Irish Pub and Restaurant - Two Irish brothers offer food, drink and atmosphere in their own great chain.  (814-453-7800)

  • Serafini's - Another tradition the relatives rave about - not my favorite.  (814-838-8111)

  • Stonehouse Inn - Our wonderful Aunt Emily recommends this upscale restaurant.  4735 West Lake Rd.

  • Teresa's Italian Deli - Two locations serving meatballs and more to die for.  (814-459-5322)

  • Valerio's - Five locations with great sandwiches, fettuccini alfredo and outstanding customer service.  Read the weblog entry, Party Hearty, for details. (814-833-2909)

November 2004 update - Homemade pasta was too thick AND they used canned mushrooms on my spaghetti.  But the meatballs and clam chowder were good.

October 2006 update - The meatballs, pizza and subs are the ultimate.  Don't miss.

SIGHTS to SEE

Presque Isle State Park - Even without the peninsula, Erie would be right on Lake Erie, but this hook shaped "almost island" provides miles of extra lake beaches and sheltered bay area for swimming, fishing and boating as well as other outdoor sports.  Perfect for summer fun.

US Brig Niagara - Reconstruction of War of 1812 flagship in Battle of Lake Erie.  Very well done.  Take a tour when the Niagara is in port.

Other sites - The Erie County Historical Society had a kettle in which the bones of Revolutionary War hero General Mad Anthony Wayne were boiled to facilitate transportation of his body following his death in 1796 in the Block House.  This always fascinated me in a ghoulish way, but I'm not sure of its current location.

Block House - Pennsylvania Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, 560 East Third Street, Erie, PA 16512 - This small fortification is largely neglected.  It was reconstructed in 1867 and is set near a civil war cemetery on the grounds of a veteran's home.

More - Erie was a stop on the Underground Railroad and played a role in War of 1812.  For details, visit http://www.goerie.com/erieyesterday/http://www.greenlightwrite.coml.

BEST TIME to VISIT

Summers in Erie are generally perfect.  Winters are cold and snowy - you've probably heard Erie mentioned when heavy snowfall records are listed.

ACCOMMODATIONS

GETTING THERE

Erie is a natural stop on Interstate 90 between Cleveland and Buffalo, but if you happen to be flying, the airfare won't be cheap.

When I saw the title, The Mad Cook of Pymatuning, I knew I had to read Christopher Lehmann-Haupt's book about coming of age in a Pennsylvania summer camp in the early 1950s because our parents worked in a Pennsylvania summer camp in the early 1950s.  Not like the one in the book, one hopes, but still ...

The Mad Cook of Pymatuning is very good with rough edges.  Other readers will no doubt join me in asking why the loose ends weren't tied up a little more tightly.  And readers from northwest Pennsylvania will want to know why a book set on the shores of Pymatuning Lake does not mention the ducks who are said to "walk" upon the backs of the fish at the spillway.  [I've seen this and it's more or less true.]  Nancy

These days, the French and Indian War gets short shift in classrooms.  Since it decided the nationality of a good many millions of North Americans, perhaps we should raise an outcry.  But in the meantime, there are novels like Beverly Swerling's Shadowbrook that make the era come alive.  This book is an actual page turner!  Nancy
