At one time, we had four ponds in our yard.  Although super gardener, aka our Director of Fireworks, has since changed his landscaping plan, we both got a lot of information from the Complete Guide to Watergardens.  We recommend you get a copy of this book before you dig.  Nancy

When I first moved to the southwestern US, I drove across Arkansas to Texas on an interstate highway bordered by miles and miles of wildflowers.  Rick Imes' book, Wildflowers, brought it all back - who wouldn't fall in love with a land covered in beauty?   Nancy

Don't be deceived by the title of Natural Gardening in Small Spaces.  Author Noël Kingsbury was apparently raised in the wide open spaces of Patagonia or perhaps Manitoba and has a very different concept of the word small.

However, Kingsbury has included lots of information that will be helpful to people in diverse zones who want to create habitat beautiful gardens.

The book is worth a look.  Nancy

Prolific garden and gardening author Laura C. Martin caught my eye with her book on Southern Gardens.  I love visiting public gardens and this book highlights some regional treasures.  I'm glad to have discovered the series.  You will be, too.  Nancy

In my slow but steady plan to visit all the major gardens I possibly can, I rely on books like Diane Kostial McGuire's Gardens of America.  McGuire's nicely-illustrated work gives a history of American gardening that brings an interesting element to my passion for gardens.  Nancy

Not your typical gardening book, Susan Orlean's work of non fiction is a must for those who want to know more about the orchid business and weirdness in general.  Nancy

PS  Adaptation is the film about making The Orchid Thief into a movie.  Now that I've seen it, I'm not sure how I feel about recommending it.  The UTD thinks it's brilliant for the car crashes alone, but while the acting is great and the concept is clever, Adaptation did not grab me by the tendrils and make me want to own a copy - my personal bottom line.  And definitely, do NOT read the book first

I was in a hurry when I picked up The New Kitchen Garden.  It wasn't until I got home that I realized it was not a cookbook, but a wonderful garden design and information book with recipes.  Score!  Nancy

Given the unusual weather conditions in the last years, it makes sense to concentrate on local plant varieties that might have the best chance to survive.

Enter Patricia A. Taylor's Easy Care Native Plants.  Taylor has taken a complicated and wide-ranging list of possibilities (sorry about the territorial pun) and given us lots of plant choices we can feel comfortable with.  Finally.  Nancy

Spiral bound, The Garden Planner, by John N. Walker and Graham Strong is made up of stacks of four cards per page.  The front of each card is a beautiful color photograph of an individual species of flower.  The back explains the care and feeding of each plant.  By flipping through, you can try different combinations in planning your beds and borders.  I think it's gardening fun - even when the weather won't let me work outside.  Jane Marie

Michelle Wan is writing an excellent murder mystery series set in the Dordogne region of France.  One of the main characters is an orchid fanatic, and there's so much local charm in the books, you will be delighted.  Begin with The Orchid Thief.     Nancy

Tips:

To keep the cats out of your flower garden, scatter dog hair in the beds. It's free and won't harm Mother Nature or your plants. Bonnie Shivley

Graveside care:

  • Respect the rules of the cemetery
  • Do not chalk tombstones - it's hard on the stone
  • Do not use bleach or shaving cream to clean a headstone - the chemicals are too strong
  • Use water and a soft cloth to remove dirt from a headstone
