Crafts Gardening Home Helps I made this wooden tray when spring fever struck and I had just purchased a floral stencil and a small assortment of glazed paint. The tray itself, except for the metal handles, is made from scrap wood we had in the garage. Actually, it's wood siding, which gives it that rough, primitive appearance. Don't worry about your painting skills. That's what foam stamps are for!

Assemble:
Spray paint the top and bottom of the 20” x 15” board that will be the base of your tray with white paint. Cut the 6' of molding into four lengths, sufficient to fit around the edge of the tray base (approximately 2 at 20” and 2 at 15,” but measure for accuracy before you cut). Mitering the corners is optional. I didn't miter. Paint the molding strips with a colored acrylic. I chose a medium green. Lay out or very lightly trace with pencil the foam floral stamps, using the picture on my tray as a guide for placement. (I did this on the back of the board first. It turned out fine and now both sides of the tray are decorated with flowers.) Using the sponge brush, paint the foam floral stamps a multitude of colors before stamping them onto the board. Each stamp can be reused once before reloading it with paint. This will produce a faded appearance. Loading the thin paintbrush with dark green glaze, smoothly drag it across the baseboard to form stems. If the line is shaky or the glaze skips places, fill in with a leaf. Using the sponge brush, put dark green glaze on the leaf stamp and press it onto the baseboard, scattering the leaves along the stems. The leaf sponge can be used a second time before reloading to soften the look. Once the decorative paint dries, nail the painted molding to the edges of the tray. Paint over the nail heads to cover them. Cover the tray with two coats of clear sealer. Mark where the handles will go, drill tiny pilot holes and attach them. Display your pretty tray in the kitchen, bedroom or on the hearth against the fire screen as I do. |
