To Burn or Not to Burn? That really is the question. Gel candles can be dangerous! I personally know a man who showed me the remains of his gel candle after his wife had left it burning unattended for a couple of hours. He'd walked past the door and seen a flame twice as tall as the candle itself, the glass container cracked, and the gel formulation dripped onto his cabinet. He grabbed the first thing he could find, a magazine. He held the magazine over the top of the container for a long period of time to smother the flame. But when he removed the scorched periodical, the flame from the gelled wick leapt to life unaffected! He finally managed to put out the candle by covering it with the lid of an aluminum cooking pot.
Candle safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association Extinguish all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Keep candles away from anything that could catch fire like upholstered furniture, curtains, rugs, books, and papers. Use candleholders that will catch any dripping wax. If you decide to light a gel candle, do not leave it burning for more than an hour or two. Be careful when using any candle during a power outage. If you want to leave a candle burning in the window, use a battery powered or electric one. The flame from a lighted candle could set the blinds or draperies on fire. Don’t put candles where children or animals can knock them over. Don’t put aerosol cans or flammable liquids anywhere near burning candles. Trim wicks to 1/4 inch and smother taper and pillar candles when they have about two inches of wax left to burn. As for votive candles, extinguish them when there is at least a 1/2 inch of wax left. Beware of any decorative candle that has combustible items inside the wax. Don’t carry a lighted candle while walking around. Like a gun, keep all candles and matches locked away from curious children. Please, please take care when burning candles. In this day and time when we have so many distractions, it is easy to forget that little flame we have burning for ambiance can turn our world to ash.
