Goodbye Lie FAQs
The
main character, Breelan, has the middle name "Jane." Why did you name her after
yourself?
When I wrote the part of the mother, Miss Ella, I thought of
Breelan like a daughter. Jane is my real daughter's middle name.
Why
are there two grandmother figures, Grammy and Peeper, when Peeper isn't
technically a relative?
Older people impart much
wisdom accompanied by strong opinions. I thought it would be fun to have two
grumpy "grammas" who adore the Dunnigan family and one another, despite their
frequent squabbling.
Did
you ever write for a newspaper like Breelan?
No
Do you prepare all the recipes in your story?
Either Nancy, a friend, relative or I tests each recipe before
it goes in a book or on our website.
Why did you choose Martha Bear® as your mascot, and why is she mentioned in The
Goodbye Lie?
Nancy said we needed a mascot of some sort. I looked around my home and
saw the large white stuffed bear with a floral tummy sitting in a bentwood
rocker. I made her over 20 years ago, but never named her. Since everyone
loves teddy bears, she seemed a logical choice. Nancy suggested we name her
Martha, after our mother, and immediately, ideas for Martha Bear® stories
exploded in my head.
Now there are 20 bear / critter stories on site ,and I'm
working on a book of Martha Bear® short stories. The working title is A-Mazing
Martha Bear®, about the everyday tangled fun in the world of beardom.
As for
Martha Bear's cameo in The
Goodbye Lie, who's to say Martha's ancestor didn't originally belong to
Breelan Dunnigan?
Who makes all the crafts featured in The
Goodbye Lie and on your website?
I do. I've always loved crafting. Being busy, I try to find projects that are
easily completed and still be something I can be proud to show off and share
with readers. I also like old-fashioned crafts. I've always appreciated an
item that is handmade. Homemade / handmade things are a disappearing art, and I'm
doing my part to perpetuate it.

Four extra

What
inspires you to write historic romance novels?
An author once told me to
write what I like to read. My favorite story and movie has always been Gone With The Wind.
The culture, the customs and the costumes return me to more
gracious times. My stories are set later, in the 1880s, so the
turmoil is personal and not national, as in the Civil War. It's the
conflicted, eternal love the characters have for one another that inspire me. I
color the scenes with the frills and architecture of the times that are so
different from those of the modern day.

make a woman feel secure, physically and emotionally.

When were
you most embarrassed?
When I didn't
open a present but wrote a thank you note based on the box in which the gift
came. I thanked someone for a much-needed toaster when in fact the present
inside was a pitcher shaped like a lemon! The generous soul who gave me the
pitcher and I never spoke of this particular humiliation.
What would
you change about yourself?
I'd like thicker skin.
No, please DON'T change that about
yourself. It is not a happy thing to have a thicker
skin. You lose much of your trust in people, and there
is a certain sense of sensitivity that can never be
recaptured. We NEED people like you in this world, to
make the world a softer, gentler place for the rest of
us. Those of us who have been exposed to life's harsher
lessons, LOVE people like you. We long to be around and
loved by people like you, and we would do anything to
protect you, your innocence, your love, your humor, and
your gentleness. Please, pray for strength and the love
of others to help you endure, but pray that you do NOT
develop a "thicker skin." For your own sake, and for
that of all the people who love you and appreciate you
just the way you are. Bonnie |
