Great Elephants
By Nancy Kamp

Even before Hannibal Barca of Carthage crossed the Alps with his army and his war elephants to attack ancient Rome, the elephant played a part in the lives of humans.

We know Ice Age man hunted wooly mammoths for food and other necessities.  Gradually, people tamed their descendents for use in logging and transportation, especially in India and Southeast Asia.

Most of us will never see the dwindling herds of African elephants, but many visit zoos worldwide to make the acquaintance of the great gray beasts.  As we come to understand the need for a natural habitat for wild animals in captivity, zoos are not only caring for their animals in a more humane way, but shelters are spring up to allow abused animals to recover and live out their lives in family groups.

Babar - Jean de Brunhoff wrote The Story of Babar in 1931.  His son Laurent took up the franchise and continues this delightful series about an elephant king who goes to the opera and deals with mischievous monkeys.

Dumbo - Our painstaking research to date indicates Dumbo is a classic Disney story original that breaks your heart.  Who doesn't love the little guy with the big ears?

Horton - Horton is the star of several beloved Dr. Seuss books about kindness.   If your children haven't met Horton, they are in for a treat.

The Saggy Baggy Elephant - If you grew up with Little Golden Books, you will remember this elephant who had a problem with self image.  Several authors have added books to the original tale.
