We know Ice Age man hunted wooly mammoths for food and other necessities. Gradually, people tamed their descendents for use in logging and transportation, especially in India and Southeast Asia. Most of us will never see the dwindling herds of African elephants, but many visit zoos worldwide to make the acquaintance of the great gray beasts. As we come to understand the need for a natural habitat for wild animals in captivity, zoos are not only caring for their animals in a more humane way, but shelters are spring up to allow abused animals to recover and live out their lives in family groups.
