My home and family were recently threatened by a fire in our neighbor's gas grill. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but two homes were damaged, one being mine. Granted, the damage could have been so much worse. But this story could happen to you - unless you take precautions. It all began in the twitch of a pesky fly. My husband and I were in our home, preparing to sit down at the table for our evening meal. In a rare moment of non-conversation, we heard a rushing sound that he thought was a near-by airplane. I thought it might be coming from a hot air balloon passing overhead. The rushing turned into a roar and the roar grew louder. I turned off the stove - I never like to leave appliances unattended, and we, as well as many folks in our neighborhood, went outside to see what the commotion was. Shock and momentary helplessness come to mind as I think of the sight of the roof-high flames shooting from our next door neighbor's gas grill. Good sense took over, and I ran back inside to call 911 while my husband and neighbor battled the flames with a garden hose and a fire extinguisher. By the time two fire engines arrived, the flames were nearly contained. A large hole had melted through our neighbor's aluminum patio roof under which the grill was standing. His deck was charred, the grill destroyed, and the new siding on our house was scorched and buckling. I don't know specifically what the cause of the fire was, perhaps a faulty valve, a loose connection, a leaking hose? But when I had time to think of the serious ramifications of the catastrophe that had threatened us, I realized how blessed we were that no one was hurt - considering that both husband and neighbor were fighting the fire in an enclosed courtyard AND the propane tank could have exploded. Thankfully, as well, irreplaceable treasures in both our homes were spared. In the hope that this will not happen to anyone with whom I have contact, let me offer some safety tips for using a gas grill:

And a bonus tip: Always keep children a safe distance from gas grills and anything that involves burning.
