The kitty was stressed. I realized this from the way he panted, an odd and disturbing thing to observe in a cat. And that's how I'd discovered him, lying outside the wooden gate, unable to hurl his bulk up and over the cement wall as was his usual. That velvet bag of bones, furry fat, and yellow eyes surely would have raised the latch despite his normal handicap of no thumbs. But something new was wrong. The cat had moseyed into a variety of pricking weeds, and now each near-invisible needle was driven deeper into the pampered pads of his feet by his body’s own gravity. Those pads were speckled red. I carried my cat into the bathroom sink, his nocturnal resting place of choice. As his seventeen pounds filled the bowl, those wide, innocent eyes looked up, asking why he was hurting, pleading for me to fix him. Tweezers fetched, I began extracting the nasty nettles. As the cat flinched from the hurt of each extraction, I winced in unison. Three quarters of an hour later, my brow was damp, but I'd made my kitty all better. He may not speak English, and I may not speak "feline,” but we communicate as if we did. Maybe I could give lessons in "Meowish,” or "Engleow." But no. Anyone with a cat eventually and instinctively picks up the animal's language the first moment they feel a purr or receive a loving lick. "All creatures great and small … ” The Good Lord sure knows His business.
