Prayer Beads "Prayer is a radical response to the mysteries of life." Matthew Fox more quotations Many of the major religions suggest the use of beads to help the faithful keep track of their prayers. Mala - The Hindu Mala is probably the oldest type of prayer beads. There are 108 beads in a mala, which means rose or sometimes garland in Sanskrit. The mala is worn around the neck and helps count mantras. The Buddhist Mala can also consist of 108 beads, but smaller malas can be used. Malas are often made from the wood of the Bodhi tree. Prayers for purification are said as each bead is touched. Buddhist prayer beads in Japan are hung on tea house walls and contain 112 beads. Prayer Beads - In Islam, the 99 bead mesbaha or subha, meaning praise in Arabic, is used to keep track of the 99 names of Allah. Prayer Rope - Orthodox Christians use a knotted rope with a cross on one end to repeat a prayer to Jesus, which asks for mercy. Rosary - The rosary is used by Roman Catholics and members of the Anglican Church. The Roman Catholic rosary, which refers to a rose garden of prayers, is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. A prayer is said as each of the 100 beads is touched. The Anglican rosary consists of 33 beads. Like the Roman Catholic rosary, it features a crucifix on one end.
