Romance The Quiet Man is one of my top ten favorite movies. JM |
The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne, as Sean Thornton, and Maureen O'Hara, as Mary Kate Danaher, is simply delightful. This 1952 light-hearted love story is a celebration of everything about the Emerald Isle. Filmed on location in Innisfree, Ireland in glorious color, the charm flows as freely as do the gulps of Guinness Stout drunk by supporting actors Barry Fitzgerald, as Michaleen Flynn, the town busybody and bookie, and Will Danaher, played by Victor McLaglen as Mary Kate's overbearing brother. Sean Thornton, a prize fighter who has killed a man in the ring, arrives in Innisfree to forget. He plans to settle where his ancestors lived. However, the cottage and land are now owned by the Widow Turlain (Mildred Natwick). She is torn about selling the land to Thornton because Danaher is also interested in the property as well as interested in the widow herself, but Thornton closes the deal. An angry Danaher wants to fight Thornton. Thornton refuses, earning himself the nickname, the Quiet Man. Thornton takes a serious liking to Danaher's beautiful sister, Mary Kate, and she is interested right back. Danaher forbids his sister to have anything to do with Thornton. Enter Michaleen, a matchmaker with the strictest of standards unless alcohol is involved. A great deal of the charm of this film comes from the dialog and authentic accent of the delectable Mr. Fitzgerald. He is so absolutely darling, you want to throw your arms around him in a huge hug. The local priest, Father Lonergan, played by Ward Bond schemes. Romance blossoms to the drama of thunder and lightening. And family feuds lead to a convincing ballet of battling brutes. The entire film makes for fine family entertainment. It's a wonderful movie for anyone who is Irish, part Irish or knows an Irishman. All I can say is, "Enjoy!"
