"It's a great engine of American creativity, but it can also be an unrelenting oppressor,  which robs us of time and peace of mind. ... One-upmanship is a national mania. ... Consumer products morph from luxury to convenience to necessity. ... If you don't buy by the final stage, you're considered a crank or a pauper. ... though unlovable, ambition is socially useful.  It prods people to take risks and exert themselves. ... When the process works well, gains overwhelm losses - and not just in economic output.  Today's hyperprosperity has improved the social climate.  Almost all indicators of confidence have increased.  What people disdain as ambition, they also venerate as opportunity. ... Because everyone can be someone, the competition to rise above the crowd is unrelenting and often ruthless.  Few of us escape ambition's wounds. ... Ambition is bitter as often as sweet; but without it, we'd be sunk."  Robert J. Samuelson,   "Ambition and Its Enemies,"  Newsweek

Alexander of Macedonia was great because he was a military genius.  In A Murder in Macedon, Anna Apostolou has created an Alexander who urges his boyhood chum to solve the murder of Alexander's father.  Good times are definitely not had by all in a novel that opens in a scene Alfred Hitchcock would have drooled to be able to film, but the chum, a freed Jewish slave who was born a conjoined twin, solves the mystery.  Does she win the heart of Alexander as well?  It's doubtful, but I plan to stay tuned to this series.  Nancy

Mini Book Review List

Dare to go Bear

The great thing about novels is you can vicariously experience something that isn't likely to be part of your life - like being a detective.  In Dorothy Cannel's The Importance of Being Ernestine, two bumblers pursue truth while living in their own interesting worlds.  While this doesn't mean there's hope for my own highly discouraged singing career or that most of us will ever solve a crime, at least we get this fictional chance to go along on a charmingly unlikely adventure.  Nancy
