The War Against Miss Winter is Kathrun Miller Haines' first novel in what will hopefully be a long series about a female detective/actress in New York City during WWII.  Rosie copes with less than wonderful conditions and solves crimes - who could ask for more?  Nancy

The Depression was a time of worldwide poverty and trouble with happy song lyrics like "pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, darn ya, smile."

Enter a feisty, factory-working widow with a sense of justice and you have mysteries with a sense of history in Dorothy and Sidney Rosen's Belle Applebaum series.  All right.  Nancy

(series)

If a book you're looking for is out of print, click on any link to Amazon Books Home Page to find out if it is available as a used book.

I must love getting to know the detectives in my favorite mystery series because I sure never keep reading to demonstrate my prowess at solving crimes.

Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone is one of the most interesting female sleuths out there.  If she were real, we could be friends.  Since she's not, I keep up by reading Muller's books.  Begin with Ask the Cards a Question Nancy

Take charge women who eat doughnuts and get their men can be compelling detectives when you realize you could be stumbling through life in their shoes if only your cousin had given you a job as a bond enforcement officer.  If you'd rather read it than live it, try Janet Evanovich's series that begins with One for the Money Nancy

(series)

Dare to go Bear

The more interesting or unusual the detective, the more appealing the mystery series.  Byzantine courtier John the Eunuch is a winner in every way.  The stories are entertaining and the detective has no comparable rival in the world of sleuths.  Start with One for Sorrow by Mary Reed and Eric Mayer.  Nancy

  (series)

I got a very nice e-mail from Mary.  Read her books!
