Anyone can be a fictional detective, and one of my favorites is Hollywood mom Juliet Applebaum.  She's a former public defender married to a horror movie writer, so we get glimpses of the silver screen life along with lowlifes (lowlives? - too lazy to look) and diapers.

The author, Ayelet Waldman, is a former public defender married to writer Michael Chabon.  She knows her background material, the real reason I read mysteries, and she is very entertaining. Begin with Nursery Crimes.  Nancy

Conn Iggulden has given us a great series about Julius Caesar.  In Genghis, Birth of a Nation, Iggulden introduces Genghis Khan (apparently pronounced Chingiss Haan as there are no K sounds in Mongolian), and I am pleased to say this too is a series.  Enjoy, Nancy

Sara Donatti (Rosa Lippi)'s series that begins with Into the Wilderness is a sequel to James Fennimore Cooper's classic, The Last of the Mohicans, and contains a tribute to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series.  There's plenty of romance, but the heart of the story is the history of a very young, rather brutal United States.  The stories are based in the frontier area of upstate New York, but there's plenty of travel in what must have been extremely large vessals.  (Our Bob is a volunteer on the US Brig Niagara, which served at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, and it's not that big.)  Nancy

"Mansa Musa executed anyone who sneezed in his presence."

The Rich and How They Got That Way is pop history, but this is an Age of Greed (Which one hasn't been?), and Cynthia Crossen's take on those who amass the really big bucks is instructive.

She says, "Throughout much of human history, the most effective way to acquire part or all of other people's wealth has been to declare, 'That's mine!' and kill those who disagree.  Only in the last millennium has wealth creation become less about force than intelligence."  And, "The leading 'consumer durable' during the Middle Ages was armor."

Bottom line:  Crozen's style and subject matter are entertaining, and I learned stuff I didn't know.  Works for me.  Nancy
