(series)

Fans of Dorothy L. Sayers, rejoice.  There's a new duke's son and independent female detective couple in town - if you live in 1930's London.

David Roberts presents murder among the aristocracy complete with the political currents that were changing the world in Sweet Poison, the first in  a series.  The heroes are Lord Edward Corinth and Verity Browne.  They meet after a car accident and move immediately to dinner in a castle and the first of several deaths.

Roberts manages to make the reader care about Corinth and Browne and how they cope with murder as well their day-to-day lives in that place and time.  This is not an important book, but it is a good read with a clever plot.  If the author has turned to his literary predecessors for  guidance, this doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment to be gained from curling up with a mystery on a rainy night.  Nancy

PS One of the most popular mystery writers around is Sue Grafton.  Even those of us whose lifestyle doesn't remotely resemble that of her lone wolf California heroine / detective are addicted to the Kinsey Millhone series.  Begin with A is for Alibi and indulge in working your way through the alphabet.  Nancy

3 for 1: P. C. Doherty has written some excellent medieval mysteries based on Chaucer's characters as well as a series with a hero who keeps England safe in the 14th century.  Try An Ancient Hero, The Knight's Tale (no, not the movie) and Satan in St. Mary's.

And just to keep things interesting, Doherty has begun a series set in the Egypt of Queen Hatshepsut that begins with The Horus KillingsNancy

PS  This prolific author has taken up Alexander the Great as well.  Goodie.

Always on the lookout for a new detective, I was pleased to discover Evan Marshall's literary agent (and her cat) in the series that begins with Missing MarleneThe major flaw in the books is the constant description of wonderful meals without a hint of a recipe.  Oh well.  Nancy
