I was not pleased when I finished The October Horse and discovered it was the last book in Colleen McCullough’s series about the fall of the Roman Republic. 

McCullough did extensive research and then came to her own conclusions - Julius Caesar might well have had hypoglycemia rather than epilepsy and perhaps Octavian was severely asthmatic.  In any case, the books are packed with details, actual events I hadn’t heard of and a ready-made storyline that beats pure fiction any day.  Begin with The First Man in Rome, which focuses on the turbulent life of Gaius Marius.  (He was Julius Caesar's uncle by marriage and much more.)   Nancy
