Scientific autobiographies should be stuffy and boring by definition, but Dr. Oliver Sacks' Uncle Tungsten isn't quite what you'd expect.  He is one neurologist who can tell a good story - a gift anyone would envy.   Nancy

Mini Book Review List

Scientists didn't always wear white lab coats and work in pristine laboratories.  Once upon a time, they were alchemists and students of mystic power.  Such a one was Queen Elizabeth I's own Dr. John Dee.

In The Queen's Conjurer, Benjamin Woolley tells the story of one man's pursuit of truth and knowledge in a time when ignorance was king (queen).  Dr. Dee was brilliant, but his interests ranged from astronomy to summoning spirits, and his first biographer thought he was insane.  Woolley brings us a man who should be more than the footnote we missed in a college text.  Nancy

Scams abound in science.  Robert Park's Voodoo Science is a must-read if you REALLY want to know what's going on in the scientific community and what's a hoax.  And you don't even have to be a rocket scientist to understand what he's saying!   Nancy

Dare to go Bear

Coffee table books usually have pretty pictures, but if you leaf through Curt Suplee's Milestones of Science, you'll actually learn something.  And this book is published by the National Geographic Society so you know it's good.  Nancy

Mary, Queen of Scots was beautiful and tragic so her life makes a good plot for an historical novel.  Enter Reay Tannahill's very readable Fatal Majesty.

Tannahill also wrote the unforgettable Food in History and Sex in History so she knows how to present research in an engaging way.  This is mostly good for the reader unless you happen to be the type who lies awake at night and dreams of Roman fish sauce and severed heads (Mary's).  Nancy
