If you don't watch Masterpiece Theater on PBS, you may have missed the Sharpe series starring Sean Bean.  Fortunately, you can read the books by Bernard Cornwell that begin with Sharpe's TigerThe hero fights his way from India to Spain to Chile armed with a sword, a rifle and his wits.  War is a vital part of Sharpe's struggle to rise in a class-strangled world so the battles are dramatic and based on the real thing - the Napoleonic wars at the beginning of the 19th century.  Nancy

PS  Cornwall has written what may well be the first in a new series in Gallow's Thief.  I certainly hope so although I couldn't get through the first book in his Nathanial Starbuck series.  Go figure.

PPS  And now I've stumbled on another good series from Cornwell.  It begins with The Archer's Tale, which is set in the 14th century and packed with blood and guts (What else from Cornwell?) as well as a good story.

Book Review List

Dare to go Bear

Perhaps I have an obsession with the Pacific Theater of WWII.  If you start looking through the history book reviews, you'll find several on this subject.  What's odd is that I have no personal connection to the time or place beyond a late uncle whose stories I never got to hear.

Be that as it may, I liked Ghost Soldiers enough to buy it for my father.  Hampton Sides has chronicled the brave, the bad and the ugly story of a rescue mission from hell in the occupied Philippines of 1945.  He quotes an unsigned diary with these words:  "We are all ghosts now.  But once we were men."  Nancy
