Sufferings in Africa, by Captain James Riley, was first published in 1817 and was a favorite book of Abraham Lincoln.

It took me a couple of pages to get into the story of an American sailing ship captain and his crew, shipwrecked in North Africa and sold into slavery.  But once I really started reading, I kept reading, wanting to know more.

So far, they haven't made a big budget movie about Riley's adventures, but this is an incredible story.   Nancy

I fell in love with Dune when I saw the David Lynch movie.

1984, DVD

I immediately read every single volume Frank Herbert, the series creator, had written - even though the going was a little rough toward the end.

Then, bliss - a new movie, Dune 2000 (↑), and new prequels (↓) by Herbert's son Brian and Kevin J. Anderson.  The prequels make up a wonderful series that begins with Dune: The Butlerian Jihad.  If you haven't discovered it, don't hesitate.  Nancy

An agony aunt is the British version of an advice columnist.  If you've invented one who is a menopausal former pathologist, you've just got to have her solving mysteries.

Enter Jo Bannister and The Primrose ConventionBannister combined characters who  come off as if their bizarre characteristics were randomly picked out of a fishbowl.  Even so, the plot is perfectly plausible.

I thought this book was the beginning volume in a series.  I now believe I was wrong, but any book by Jo Bannister is a good read.  Nancy

Tourists and students rarely come to understand the heart and soul of a place.  And when that place is as vast as Africa, there are many hearts and millions of souls.  Enter Zambian born Wilbur Smith.  Smith's ancient Egyptian series begins with The Seventh Scroll and his South African series (that's plural) begin with Birds of PreySmith writes historical fiction at its best.  Nancy

Don't you just love adventure stories with larger than life characters?  Bartle Bull has a series set in 20th century North Africa that has all the elements for success.  Begin with The White Rhino Hotel.  Nancy
