Dare to go Bear

One of the most intriguing mystery series I've found is I. J. Parker's, which is set in 11th century Japan.  The hero is a minor noble who struggles with bureaucracy, enemies and doing the right thing.  Begin with The Dragon Scroll.  Nancy
In a rush to cover the highlights of US history by the end of the school year, most teachers speed past the early, expansionist  years of the new nation.  Their students are unlikely to recall the name, let alone the life, of Andrew Jackson who was once so popular he continued to receive votes long after his death.

In Jackson's Way, John Buchanan unearths blood, drama, politics and turbulence most of us know absolutely nothing about.  It's about time.    Nancy

Book Review List

Jerome Alexander, author of 160 Degrees of Deviation, The Case for the Corporate Cynic, had me when I read, "I am a firm believer that some people are just born jerks."

Alexander's slim volume of management sense not only agrees with my long held thoughts, but also has some practical advice for senior managers who want a healthier, more productive workplace.  Get it.  Read it.  Use it.  Nancy

The good gals don't always win in real life, but a fictional righting of wrongs gives us hope.  In the case of The Bulgari Connection, by Fay Weldon, we also get jewelry and humor so who wouldn't want to relax with this novel of he-done-her-wrong-but-she-triumphs-in-the-end.  Go for it. Nancy

Dare to go Bear

As soon as I got a copy of Michael Goodwin's Junk with the gorgeous man on the cover, I thought, "Why do they need to tell me the hero is black since I'm not blind or I wouldn't reading?"  But as I got into the story I realized our perceptions of those others color our actions to a mega-huge degree.  This, plus the author's experience in the fun and frivolous world of junk bond trading gives Junk an interesting, if cautionary, edge.  So while I should have put this mini-review on our Money page, it's here instead with the jewels.  Nancy
