You can't have too many variations on the detective theme to suit a mystery buff so I welcomed the discovery of Ruby, the rabbi's wife in Sharon Kahn's in Fax Me a Bagel.  Ruby is a computer literate widow in a congregation of characters that remind me of the reason I'm not a joiner.  With this series, we get all the benefits of group membership without leaving our armchairs.  Nancy

Book Review List

Today we fly from Oklahoma City to Indonesia in less than a day (airlines willing), but in the 19th century the railroad brought people and places together.  In Nothing Like It in the World, Stephen E. Ambrose recounts the history of the building of the railroads across the United States.  By hand, and with blood, sweat and not a few tears on what one irate traveler called "an elongated human slaughter house."  Nancy

The heroine of one of my favorite mystery series is called Agatha Raisin -  no doubt in tribute to Agatha Christie, whose books I've never reviewed in these pages but have always loved.  Mrs. Raisin is nothing like that celebrated writer.  And she certainly doesn't resemble Christie's Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot, but she always gets her criminal and she is wonderfully human, well bear like, according to author M. C. Beaton.

The first book in the series is Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death.  Don't miss it or Death of a Gossip, the first in Beaton's equally delightful Hamish Macbeth (rural Scottish policeman) series.  Nancy

PS  The Skeleton in the Closet appears to be #1in still another series.  Lucky us.
