The day is February
14th, the year 1938. You're feeling blue because you don't
have someone special with whom to share this special occasion of the
heart. It's then that your ears perk to the sound of the front doorbell
ringing. You rush to answer it and, behold, it's a man in a dark blue
uniform bearing an envelope. He offers you the message, you call for a
nickel from you father for a tip, toss it to the smiling deliveryman,
close the door, and bound up the stairs to your bedroom. Your skirts
flying, you flop on the bed to read your newly arrived Western Union
Telegram. Your heart pounds as you unfold the missive to expose a colorful picture of a Romeo-type character, prone, leaning on one elbow, looking longingly at his Juliet and beneath it all a small box is checked which reads: Roses are red ... Violets are blue ... Sugar, you're sweet ... Via WU WU WU. It's not exactly what you imagined when you dreamed of romance, but what Willie, the boy who sent it, lacks in savoir faire, he makes up in effort. The verse above came from an actual Western Union telegram that I found and had framed for my husband for Valentine's Day. It hangs on our wall as I write this. Those 1938 designs were a bargain for people who had difficulty expressing themselves. Below are several of the more interesting possibilities. Thank you, Western Union, for offering such a charming holiday option, one that we can still enjoy to this day. ♥Be my Valentine. Be my honey. We'll live on love and Daddy's money. ♥Hens, chickens, roosters, crow. You're my Valentine, don't cha know? ♥Say Big Boy - if your heart and mine will intertwine, how about being my Valentine? ♥Sign upon the dotted line. Say you'll be my Valentine. ♥What are miles to love's communion when Cupid & arrows go Western Union? Be my Valentine. ♥Too far to kiss you, but this greeting says I miss you, dear Valentine. ♥Valentine greetings to the sweetest person in the world on the world's sweetest day. ♥Sorry I can't be with you today so I'm sending my love this speedy way. ♥A Valentine for a little Miss, and heaps of love with Daddy's kiss. ♥Wishing you a happy heart now and always. ♥Violets are blue, and I'll be too, if you don't say, "Yes, I love you.” ♥Love may be the last word in some telegrams but it's first in this one. ♥Please save my heart from being wrecked. Send Cupid's answer to me collect. ♥I can't talk, only s-t-u-t-t-e-r. Valentine's Day makes my heart flutter. Before World War II, Western Union charged $.35 for a 15-word telegram of your own composition or $.25 for any one of the prepared telegram verses above - and that included delivery!
