Tonight was the Ghost Host, the first school dance of the fall, and Mack would be going with the prettiest girl in ninth grade, Suzanne Wildobeater. The image of her sparkling blonde hair, highlighted neon green, made his lips part into a grin that exposed braces compacted with flecks of Parmesan cheese left from dinner. But he didn't notice. He was too busy showering. Then, since some hateful person in his family had used the last clean bath towel, Mack stealthily tip-toed naked and dripping to his room to stand before his closet in search of the right garments that would impress Suzanne and, if he were lucky, a few of her girlfriends. A black-stripped T shirt and snug jeans looked perfect for this last day in October. With nothing to shave, he went straight to his dresser where he applied a sloppy splash of blue aftershave judged best smelling for its blue hue. A few more minor improvements, and he would be ready. Back in the bathroom, Mack grabbed his toothbrush, squeezed out a double dollop of toothpaste. He began the process of brushing, to be followed by flossing through the braces, then - Dear God. Dear God! Like the Amelia Lighthouse, it glowed back at him, its golden reflection pulsating for attention. Like Mount Everest's snow, its raised peak was capped with a whitish sack of repulsion. Before Mack's bulging eyes, located approximately 47.5 degrees northwest of his flared left nostril, lay a major mongo - one massive ZIT. Now, that's scary!! |
