Teddy Bears are part of Americana, so having a teddy in your home is a patriotic thing to do. Should you be fortunate enough to have a teddy from your childhood or one from an older relative, an antique or any bear at all, your lovable friend needs to be well taken care of. Whether years of play have soiled the dear thing or time itself, certain dos and don'ts must be observed to preserve your bear for as long as possible. Unless love and comfort are your only reasons for sharing your space with a teddy bear, try and keep as much of the original tag, ribbon, clothing, if any, as possible. This will help teddy retain his value. If your stuffed critter is visibly dirty, NEVER IMMERSE A TEDDY BEAR IN A SOAP AND WATER BATH or worse yet, in the washing machine, which could tear him from limb to limb! Instead, make a very light solution of mild detergent and water. Dip a towel in the water and focus on cleaning one small area of your bear at a time. Use very, very tender rubbing strokes so as not to dislodge any fur. To remove the soap residue, pat the fur with a cloth that has been dipped in clean water and wrung out. Wrap teddy in a dry towel and pat him, gently squeezing to get out the excess dampness. Lay him out on a towel in a room with good circulation to completely dry. Don't put him in a dark closet or cover him until he is totally void of moisture or he might mildew. Yikes! Wouldn't he be embarrassed the next time he was in a hug. A group of teddy bears is called a "hug." What else could it possibly be? click on the photo of Martha Bear® and friends to enlarge it
If your bear is an antique or you've acquired him from a garage sale or you don't know his history, it is best to put him in a tightly sealed bag and place it in the freezer for at least a month to kill any insects. Always keep your bear out of direct sunlight. While he does love the feel of sun, he knows it will eventually fade and could even dry rot his fur. Dust is the enemy of your bear. When you're not cuddling, keep him in a glass cabinet so he can see out and you can see in. If he's sitting out, an occasional gentle pass with a thin cloth or pantyhose covered vacuum hose will keep him fresh. Sitting or lying down for long periods can distort his bear body. Gently plump the old boy up every once in a while. In other words, gently play with him. DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR BEAR. Talk to him kindly whenever passing his way. If he's the only bear in your home, consider finding him another ursine companion so he's not alone when the family is gone for the day or on vacation. Then again, if you make him promise to behave, take him along. If he is in good condition, an occasional outing to the store to buy him a new infant sized outfit or a new ribbon or hat will always be happily received on his part. While honey is a popular snack with bears, so is Martha Bear's recipe for Beary Juice. Make some today. He'll enjoy it and, if you're lucky, he may share with you. Whether you've had your teddy since childhood or he's a new friend, he has been and will always be the best of listeners and ever patient with you. Who could want for more?
