'n ENDS - Miscellaneous When our girls were small, we never visited a museum or national park without purchasing a book of paper dolls that related to our visit. These books were so well done, they were treasured as collectors' items rather than consigned to grubby little hands. When I began looking closely, I realized all the wonderful books my girls still love were the work of one man, Tom Tierney. So I sent off an e-mail and got Tom's responses to my questions about his work. Enjoy, PS I wasn't surprised to discover Jane Marie's interest in Tom's work. His appeal is enormous. |
LINKS We've filled our pages with Tom Tierney these paper doll links because his creations complement so many of our articles.
Interview Why did you specialize in paper dolls? Tom: My first Book “Thirty from the 30’s” was enough of a success that it led to more.
You've covered so many subjects in paper dolls. What's your favorite book? Tom: The next one!
How much research is required for each period costume paper doll book? Is more or
less
required for single subjects like Marilyn Monroe?
Tom: I have a huge store of knowledge (I’ve been in the fashion business for over 50 years) plus a large personal library on fashions. Since I’ve always been “star struck” I have a great number of books and articles on that subject also. I am a board member of the local library and they are very helpful with research that I don’t have personally. Also, I have an almost photographic memory for fashion and fashion history. All in all, I spend about one week on formal research and about three weeks on the rendering of a book—all subjects.
What subject has been the hardest subject to illustrate? Tom: I recently did a book on “Midsummer Night's Dream Fairies” and the Elizabethan costumes were pretty complicated.
Easiest to illustrate? Tom: Any of the modern fashion books.
What is your best selling paper doll book? Tom: Marilyn Monroe and Carmen Miranda run about neck and neck.
What is the most outrageous request you've had for a paper doll book? Tom: Someone recently requested a “biker” paper doll book. I may do it!
Have you rejected any subjects? Tom: No, but I’ve altered a few. What is your favorite color? Do you find yourself having to steer clear of using too much of that favorite color in illustrating the costumes? Tom: Red is probably my favorite, however, when I plan a book, color harmony is a must.
How long does it take to complete a paper doll book on average? Tom: A month.
You've been a performer and an artist. You not only draw marvelous costumes, but also write your own text. What inspires you? Tom: The knowledge that there is too much to do that is exciting. I’ll never be bored so long as I have my faculties! For more information about Tom and his work, visit his site at tomtierney.com. |
