Vicksburg Military National Park

By  Cary Kamp and Nancy Kamp

We never drive cross the Mississippi River without a certain amount of awe and wonder at the majesty of Old Man River.  And when we're coming or going into the Deep South, we usually find ourselves passing through Vicksburg on at least one leg of our trip.

This Mississippi city sits high on a bluff overlooking the river.  It has controlled river traffic since people first began living at the site.

When the Civil War broke out, Southern military leaders immediately realized the strategic importance of the "Gibraltar of the Confederacy."  The town was heavily fortified, but after a 47 day siege, Union General Ulysses S. Grant accepted Vicksburg's surrender.

While Vicksburg has a number of interesting tourist destinations, the National Military Park is a must see.

Union ironclad gunboat USS Cairo was torpedoed and sunk by the Confederacy - it was preserved by river mud and is now on display within the national park.

States on both sides of the battle erected monuments to their heroes.

The largest state monument is one of several erected by the people of Illinois.
