Main Book Review Page   Great Women

Fiction about women and their lives ranges from Jane Austen's wonderful classics (you've read them, right?) to the whole genre of books about women who've been dumped but end up with great lives - think Brigid Jones's Diary.  Since these chicklits are also amusing and the guys get what they deserve, the formula is very popular.  Of course, sometimes real life is a little more unkind, but reading about our sisters on any level lets us experience the sorrows as well as the joys.  Nancy

Women who get dumped don't always wind up in roses and clover - except in books.  Since anyone who's ever lost at love (and that would be all of us, I believe) needs a pick-me-up that isn't fattening, I strongly recommend Trisha Ashley's Every Woman for Herself.   Nancy
Carmen Bin Ladin was married to *Osama's brother.  That makes Inside the Kingdom a must read for everyone.  Nancy

*"It's tough being the spawn of Satan."  David Hochman,  TV Guide

Note: I know this author should be alphabetized under L, but you try keeping up with this website.

Acting seems like such a glamorous profession but most actors support themselves doing something else.  In Leslie Carroll's Temporary Insanity, the heroine stumbles from one (and I have to use this word) crazy temp job to the next.  There's a very little rough language, but I'll bet you've read worse.  Nancy

Until I read Rita Charbonnier's Mozart's Sister, I didn't know he had one and I certainly didn't know she, too, was a musical genius.  The novel carefully follows the life of a woman whose gifts were thrown away.  I look forward to more from the author.  Nancy

Meena, the founder of RAWA, was killed by ignorant fanatics in 1987, but not before she started an organization devoted to literacy, health, and social justice that continues to help the women of Afghanistan.

Author Melody Ermachild Chavis has chronicled the important story of Meena's struggle.  Nancy

Mary Janice Davidson writes about bright and brash young women who have wacky adventures.  The Royal Treatment is the story of the Queen of Alaska in a parallel universe that sound quite fun.   Nancy
Amazon:  Bridget Jones's Diary (series) by Helen Fielding
Amazon:  Farm Fatale: A Comedy of Country Manors by Wendy Holden
Khaled Hosseini captured the attention of the reading public with The Kite Runner.  Even though he's a man, he has written a book that speaks to the heart of women everywhere who can identify with the plight of women under the Taliban in A Thousand Splendid Suns.  Hosseini was born in Afghanistan and his connection to the heartbreak in his native country is undimmed by his years in the USNancy
I discovered Liz Jensen in My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time.  Her time traveling prostitute heroine is engaging, and Jensen's style is clever.  It appealed mightily to my "simple vegetable soul."  Nancy
Amazon:  Brilliant by Marne Davis Kellogg
Beading Diary - July 25, 2003

(series)

Most of the women who inhabit the chicklit world manage their finances well enough to scrap together a wardrobe that takes them to success along with enough makeup and wine to make the trip enjoyable.  Sophie Kinsella's Becky, the heroine of the Shopaholic series, has never seen a credit card she couldn't max out., which (sadly) makes her easier for some of us to identify with.    I suggest you balance your checkbook before reading these books.

Can You Keep a Secret? is a chicklet of another color though the heroine is (naturally) in debt too.  This time the problem is trust, but since the approach is light-hearted, just enjoy the book.  Nancy

Amazon:  It's My F---ing Birthday by Merrill Markoe
Quotations B
The Samurai's Daughter is billed as "a novel of suspense," which it is, but I felt Sujata Massey was giving me an look inside both Japanese-American and Japanese cultures.  I look forward to reading her other books.  Nancy
Author Cormac O'Brien takes a slightly irreverent look at the women who've been married to the presidents of the United States.  In Secret Lives of the First Ladies, we learn Anna Harrison was disguised as a sack of turnips to get her past British sentries during the Revolutionary War and "Mamie Eisenhower never missed an episode of As the World Turns."  Great stuff all.  Nancy
Nuala O'Faolain is a compelling and very readable writer.  Chicago May, on the other hand, was an Irish prostitute.  O'Faolain explores May's story in her sadly entertaining biography.  Nancy
Amazon:  I Don't Know How She Does It: The Life... by Allison Pearson
Quotations Woa through Wok

Love in a Torn Land is another look at the lives of women in the Middle East from Jean Sasson.

Bob in the Middle East

It's hard to feel sorry for a woman who has no money worries, lives in a great house and lands a job to drool over without any experience, but Scanlon is a comfortable writer so this book made the list. Nancy

Bonus - This book is set in Dublin, though except for the odd phrase like "your woman," (Translation - the other woman!!!  I thought it was a typo.), the location doesn't matter.

Chicklits have rules:
  • Bad boss / job trouble but interesting profession
  • Desire for great clothes
  • Major man trouble
  • Happy ending in great clothes
Weekend in Paris follows the formula, but it's an easy read.  Enjoy.  Nancy
Amazon:
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency  (series) by Alexander McCall Smith

Written by a man about a woman in Botswana, but don't miss - this series is delightful! Nancy

PS Smith's series about a divorced Scotswoman is less exuberant, but still a good read.  Begin with The Sunday Philosophy Club.

PPS Check out my mini-review on still another Smith series here

Joanna Trollope's contemporay novels of relationships are a delight.  When you've finished one her books, you continue to savor the characters and their lives.  Trollope is always a treat.  Nancy
Apparently all fashion magazine editors are bitches from hell.  As long as we don't have to work for them - and wouldn't we kill to do so? - the world of glamour and beauty still sounds fascinating.  Especially in books like Lauren Weisberger's The Devil Wears PradaNancy
